Workshop Motivation

For our workshop we had big plans this term. We wanted to organize an excursion to the parliament to Accra and moreover we had also made exact plans for the lessons with our students. Unfortunately, in the end, we had to realize that we could not achieve all that we wanted to do. Many workshops didn’t take place due to school activities or vacation.

Despite all the difficulties we finally managed to do the excursion with the help of the AIM. staff. On tuesday, the 28th of February at 4:30 am (Ghana time) 100 students, part of the AIM. staff and Suni and me left Komenda towards Accra.

When we arrived there, we went straight to the parliament and listened to a discussion between the MPs – nope, of course I’m joking, we are in Ghana here. That’s why we first had to do a big photo-shooting in front of the building of the parliament 😉 After taking pictures with and of every student, we entered the building, got checked on weapons as if we were at the airport and finally gathered inside. And then, we really had the chance to listen to the MPs debate on the president’s state of the nation address. All the students listened attentively to the discussion and I had the impression that they were interested in what the MPs and the president were saying.

Although this was definitely an interesting experience for our workshop members, the best was yet to come. Francis, our project coordinator, was able to arrange an interview with the MP of K.E.E.A., the district in which the five Senior High Schools are situated. The students of one of the schools had thought of interesting questions in advance. Moreover we had talked about how to do an interview in our workshops. Therefore, they were perfectly prepared to to a great interview with the MP Samuel Atta-Mills – and that’s what they did! I was really surprised about how they asked about politics and the new president like professional journalists. And the MP had to answer all their questions. He talked about his work, his time at school and also told them some wise words about life.

But not only the excursion had to be organized. Soon, we will publish the results of the students’ work in the form of a magazine. Therefore, we will organize a big launching. That means that we have a lot to do with taking pictures for the magazine, doing the layout and writing invitations for the launching.
