Workshopfree time

Workshopfree time

We are currently in a Workshop free time, as our students are on holidays. That means a lot of time to travel, work on various projects or just time to relax. Last one is very easy here, thanks to the beach, permanently nice weather and the Ghanaian mentality I have grown fond of. In short, I am doing awesome.

I’ve been to a few very nice places in Ghana. In Cape Three Points, the southern most point of Ghana with a beautiful beach. Afterwards I went to Kumasi, the heart of the Ashanti Region and unofficial capital of Ghana. Here is the biggest market in West Africa. Big, loud and a paradise for hipsters.

Other than that, I reall like spending time in Cape Coast, in my favourite bar, to be exact. In my bar, you can observe from an elevated point whatever happens on the beach lying beneath you while enjoying a cold beer: Football games, roaming pigs, kids playing around or just Cape Coast Castle.

This bar is slowly turning out to be my favourite place to be in Cape Coast. Even if I’m just passing through, I always find the time to enjoy an hour two over there.

By the way, beer. In Ghana, there are two popular brands of beer, Star and Club. One tastes a like water and the other one tastes like watered down beer. I have grown to like Club. One bottle costs around 4 Cedis (ca. 1€, April 2016) and that is relatively expensive. For comparison, or 4 Cedis you can buy one of these following things, a drive to Cape Coast with the Tro-Tro, half a yard of cloth (2 yards are needed for a shirt), 20 oranges, 12 (!) plantains or 3 pineapples.

Other than that, Tim, the fifth volunteer arrived in Ghana and is currently getting acclimatised in Komenda. He will join Leon and myself for the Movie Workshop and additionally writing his master thesis about his work here. I am very happy to welcome him in our group and very curious as how one writes a master thesis.

I am looking forward to the next few weeks and am sending greetings,

Lois

P.S.: Only five more months to go!?
