What’s going on in Komenda
Whilst the first snow flakes are landing on your noses in Germany and you are enjoying biscuits and tee, life in Ghana is a little bit different. Instead of snowflakes we are feeling how the sun is getting hotter and hotter. For refreshment, we enjoy eating watermelons. Also the well-known scent of gingerbread and hot wine is missing and the Christmas market in the streets is replaced by events for the election that will take place on 7th of December. A lot of Ghanaians support their party enthusiastically, you can hear music and advertisement for the various parties from loudspeakers in trucks and trotros. Crowds of dancing and singing people fill the streets, everybody is wearing the t-shirt of the party he or she supports.
At the same time, also the atmosphere in the volunteers’ house is great. The first third of the school year has passed, which means that we and the students have some weeks of vacation. That’s why we spend some days relaxing, studying some Fante words or at the beach for climbing the coconut trees.
But very soon, the to-do-list on our desk reminds us that there is a lot of work to do: articles must be corrected, an excursion must be organized and the workshops should be prepared. Our ghanaian everyday life goes on as it did before. Just sommetimes, you notice that there’s advent decoration sold in the supermarket and that there’s “We wish you a Merry Christmas” played on the radio in the trotro. In those moments, you feel the Christmas spirit and you start wondering if maybe there’s enough space for a little Christmas-palmtree on the veranda and for an advent calendar in the kitchen.
