The first third of the ICT Workshop
Christopher and I have the wonderful task to explain some Ghanaian kids how the computer works and how many different possibilities the computer has. This task requires patience because most of the kids have never used a computer before. What seemed to be normal for us (Christopher and me) is already a challenge for many students, for example the use of the computer mouse. Some kids struggle to perform the “double click”. To train this we need a lot of time but it feels like the time just flies by.
At the same time the work with the kids is a lot of fun and it is very easy to fascinate the kids for the computer by inserting pictures in documents or just to install a learning game. The kids´ behavior is perfect and (which is so fascinating for me) they are so grateful after each lesson.
In the meantime the first third of the workshop is nearly over(The School year is divided in three different terms and at the end of each term they need to write their exams. ). For the next term I wouldn´t change anything about the workshop except that we should group the kids into different skill levels because some students are just way better handling the computer then others.
Generally the workshop here in Ghana/Komenda is really great because many people and especially students don´t have the chance to work at computers. I have the feeling that the students benefit a lot from our workshop. The students learn practical computer knowledge but also different kinds of teacher methods like worksheets.
