„KOMENDA IN RETROSPECT AND PRESENT – A WAY FORWARD?”

“Welcome to the new edition of my article entitles “Komenda In Retrospect And Present – A Way Forward?”. Hope you’ve enjoyed last week’s edition i.e. “Education For What?”. Now put your thinking cup and your lexicon and let move on.

I wonder why some things are happening to our socio-economic lives without prior attention given to it. Life in yesteryears was said to be primitive and dreadful to the society. Yet, history is still repeating itself despite all technological and industrial advancements. The fishermen still adopt the old system of fishing vis-à-vis their farming counterparts. That will be very interesting to caption the points in an orderly manner.

OCCUPATION

The main occupation of the people of Komenda is fishing with few being peasant farmers. Komenda depends solely on the sea. Without the sea, life becomes very dangerous and dreadful. All other trades depend on the fishing for their survival.

A bumper harvest is an indication of raising the standard of living very high whiles a low harvest brings about hunger and poverty to the people. It has become crystal clear that our fishermen are not catching a lot of fish due the presence of trawlers and fishing boats operating within their catchments areas. Fishing has become unprofitable nowadays. So the fishermen always sell most of their wealth that they’ve acquired. Others indulge themselves in other occupations such as carpentry and driving. However, most of them holds an opinion that being a fisherman is hell and dares non of their children inherit them vis-à-vis the job. What happens to all Komenda if all fishermen decide to quit out of the job? That’s food for thoughts.

Also few of them who are peasant farmers are mainly subsistence farmers. That is, they grow crops and rear farm animals for themselves and their families and sell the little for money. The common farm tools they use are cutlass and hoes.

Well, just pause here and look out for the next edition of “Komenda In Retrospect And Present – A Way Forward”. We shall discuss about the only source of water supply to the people of Komenda. Till then, keep smiling. Will you?”
